Data reduction & compression
Compression quality prediction and configuration selection for scientific datasets.
HPDi Lab is led by Jinzhen Wang in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. We study high-performance computing and scientific data management, developing efficient methods for data reduction, compression, and data access in parallel and distributed systems. Our research combines system design, performance modeling, and machine learning to manage large scientific datasets and guide compression decisions. Our mission is to reduce the cost of storing, moving, and processing scientific data while preserving the information needed for analysis and discovery.

Jinzhen Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he leads the High-Performance Data Intensive (HPDi) Lab. His research spans high-performance computing, scientific data management, and machine learning, with an emphasis on scientific data compression, progressive retrieval, and performance modeling. He develops methods to reduce the storage and data movement costs of large scientific datasets while preserving their usefulness for analysis and learning. His work has appeared in venues including SC, ICDE, IPDPS, IEEE TPDS, and IEEE TC. Dr. Wang earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2023 under the supervision of Dr. Qing Liu, and his bachelor’s degree from Shandong University in 2015. Before joining UNC Charlotte, he served as an Assistant Professor at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. He was a research intern at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 2022 to 2023.
